How do you properly wind a weed wacker spool so the line comes out when you tap the spool?

Wind it clockwise, not too tight with your index finger between the lines.

you should be able to see some arrows molded into the spool that  shows the direction of the wind. If it is an old weed wacker, some of the plastic burs that are used to keep the line in place are worn, it will be very difficult to get the machine to work properly.

if this is a the case you can go to Lowes or Casa depot and they should be able to sell you an replacement part, cheaper than buying a new one.
