I own a home in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, TX and I would like to put it on section 8. Could someone give me some information on what steps I should take to make that happen?

  1. Refer to the PDF listed below, from the Dallas County Housing Assistance Program.

  2. Contact HUD

  3. There is a HUD office in every big city. You apply at the counter.  They approve you in 45 days (no broken windows, no bug infestations, all exterior doors work properly).  Then you put it up for rent.  If the rent is $675,   HUD pays you $600 and the tenant pays you $75.  The tenants know that you are getting the $600 guaranteed so they test you; will you really evict them if they don't pay the $75.  Once you allow that, you will never see another $75 again. /

  4. Not sure about TX but in my state its the tenants that are section 8, not the house. In your leasing ads in the paper  you can say section 8 welcome. Then you will get section 8 tenants and will get your money from the govnt.

  5. Simply advertise that you are willing to accept section 8 tenants. Nevertheless, you cannot base your entire renting criteria on the perspective tenant being sec. 8 eligible. If you find a sec. 8 tenant and want to rent to them you will then have the unit inspected by the state/local housing authority. Some of the guild lines for sec. 8 housing are stricter then general housing requirements so beware. Nevertheless, do your homework on the prospective tenant. I am not saying that all on sec. 8 play the game, but many know the rules and will use them in their best interest. I HIGHLY suggest to you to learn those rules and regulations prior to renting to sec.8 because once they are in it's hard to get them out.
