How do you put a password?

Question

I have a wireless router, how do I put a password on it so that only this household can use it?

I know it sounds selfish but others can use the signal for free. I don't mind that so much but it slows this PC down when someone else is 'piggy-backing'

enable WEP or WPA options available in the wireless  router. it will have a key. you'll have to enter the key when u connect to ur router( only once u have to enter it). see the user guide of ur router  for the correct steps.

It should have a WAP key, if not ring up the provider and ask for one, this should help you.

Linksys router do this, if its not a linksys router I think other routers settings are similar

Login to the routers ip, the pasword is 'admin' if you have not set-up a password of your own to login to the routers ip.

Click-on the Wireless tab and then click on Wireless Security

enter the followings

Security Mode----------WPA2 Personal

WPA Alogorithms-----TKIP+AES

WPA Shared Key------enter a 10 digit number and note it well

finally Save Settings

i don't think it should be a problem - as normally you have to enter the WAP code that's on your router when first connecting. so unless they are in your house to read the code they won't be able to log on. that's how mine works anyway. i know that you can also check who's using your router by looking in network connections

you can put a password on to your router or as its called a WEP key

so anyone trying to log on cannot if they dont have the WEP key..

by the way this isnt selfish its the correct thing to do. its for your saftey..

you need to access the router through a web browser..

then go to the wireless section and activate the WEP..
