How do you qualify a thoroughbred racehorse?

Unlike standardbreds, thoroughbreds do not run in qualifying races prior to pari-mutual starts.  They are required to get clearance from the starting gate crew prior to entering their first race.  To get a gate card the horse simply has to break from the gate as part of one of their morning training sessions without causing a fuss going in and to break running once the gate opens.
