  1. Making a tub, not a walk in shower, is difficult because of the increased pressure of the water on the sides when it is filled.

Basically you have to build a deep shower pan, with reinforced sides underneath the tile. Luck.

  2. Keep in mind that, like most natural stones, it requires an aggregate sealer to protect against stains and spillage. Also, there can be big color variances for you batch because of the varying degree of mineral deposits in the stone material and travertine can scratch easily...do not use polished travertine on the floors. Using honed travertine is the best option to avoid scratches on floors. And, the polished material would be too slippery in the bathroom floor.

  3. I tile every day of my life and have probably worked more bathrooms than much else, and a tub is not an object to tile over. I may be wrong, but that's how your question reads.

With no offense meant, COSTLY MANNER would certainly be the case if you happened to manage tiling over a tub, then having to re mediate the negatives, after the fact. Beyond that I wouldn't use Travertine in a bath, but that's just my opinion.

You could Box in the tub, creating a sunken tub look, and then install concrete backer board over the framework, and tile it. You'll always have issues with caulking and grouting however, and for a "richer" look, and boxing, should include a thought of Bullnose tile at edges.

The mortar for walls and floor would have to be a Poly based at least, as well as the grout, and the substrate should all be concrete backer board.

    Just my two "sense"
