How do you reach this level of desperation?

Question

I was watching a news report about a Nigerian scam where women meet men online and they start asking them for money and they have managed to get women to take out loans to the tune of $35,000 or clear out their life savings to send them $60,000 to $100,000!! How can you be smart enough to have that kind of money saved, and yet be SO desperate that you will send that kind of money to someone you have never met? This just astounds me!
