How do you react to the homeless?

When you cross the path of a homeless person on the street, what do you do?

What if they address you?

I ignore them and if they talk then I walk faster.

In Melbourne (Australia), it's hard to tell whether a person is actually homeless or just some druggie, alcoholic or deadbeat. We have reasonable welfare system here compared to the US (though I think it's less good now than it used to be). If a person asks for money for food, if I have time I will buy them some food rather than give them money (so they can't use the money to buy unhealthy substances). Sometimes people sound really obviously like they're faking (they lie about their situation and try to sound more miserable than they are - it's true!) and I don't like them because I feel they're trying to take me for an idiot; I ignore those people.

I grew up in a slum area, so I saw it a lot. If i've never seen the person before then i'd give them some change. When I see the same person over and over again, then no!  I get it a lot at the gas station. They need some change because their car has broke down. That's game! If you have a man with you offer to drive them back to their car and watch how the story changes. If they are outside a restaurant and they are hungry instead of giving them money offter to buy the food and watch how the story changes.
