How do you read the odds in baseball when they list numbers like -135, etc. What do the numbers mean?

I look in the paper or on the internet and don't understand how to read them. Are they compared to a dollar bet?

  1. -135 means you would have to put up $135 to win $100.  If it were +135 that means you would win $135 on a $100 bet.   Negative numbers (where you put up more to win less) are the favored team, positive numbers (where you put up less to win more) are the underdog.  Hope this helps
