How do you read this ? i dont understand ?

this is a recipe to make rose water. i'm 14 and somehow i jus dont under stand the instruction . :P i'm getting dumb . lol

can you explain the instruction in terms that i would understand ?

NGREDIENTS

2-3 quarts fresh roses or rose petals

Water

Ice cubes or crushed ice

1. In the center of a large pot (the speckled blue canning pots are ideal) with an inverted lid (a rounded lid), place a fireplace brick. On top of the brick place the bowl. Put the roses in the pot; add enough flowers to reach the top of the brick. Pour in just enough water to cover the roses. The water should be just above the top of the brick.

2. Place the lid upside down on the pot. Turn on the stove and bring the water to a rolling boil, then lower heat to a slow steady simmer. As soon as the water begins to boil, toss two or three trays of ice cubes (or a bag of ice) on top of the lid.

3. You’ve now created a home still! As the water boils the steam rises, hits the top of the cold lid, and condenses. As it condenses it flows to the center of the lid and drops into the bowl. Every 20 minutes, quickly lift the lid and take out a tablespoon or two of the rose water. It’s time to stop when you have between a pint and a quart of water that smells and tastes strongly like roses.

  1. I'm not sure how the brick functions in this, but the basics are that you are distilling the liquid by evaporating it and then capturing the condensation. That's the same basic method as distilling brandy or other liquors. The boiling rose liquid evaporates, hits the ice cold lid and condenses, dripping back into the liquid. You're using the inverted lid so you have a concave surface to hold the ice.

    Not sure if that answers your question, but I hope it helps.

    BTW - good on ya for trying to do something like this at your age. I was only up to toasted cheese sandwiches then I was that old.


  2. Well, you take a large pot, put a brick in it. and on top of the brick you put a bowl (which has to be strong towards heat)...

    You put the rose petals you have in the pot until it reaches the brick and pour water on it... (The water should be just above the top of the brick.)

    Then you place the lid upside down, turn the stove on , bring water to boil, then again lower the heat... when the water starts to boil put some ice cubes on the lid.

    so basically the water inside will evaporate and the because of the cold lid it will condense. and it will drop back into the bowl...

    and you will have your rose water (in the bowl).

  3. This is complicated, would take hours, and you're likely to burn yourself on steam while you're doing it.

    You can buy rosewater at the gourmet grocery store.  It costs about two dollars and it's in the same section as the flavoring extracts like vanilla.  I think that would be a much better idea than trying to follow this recipe.

  4. Get a large pot

    Put a regular brick in it

    Put a bowl on top of the brick, but make sure the lid of the pot can still fit on top, upside-down

    Put the roses or whatever flowers inside the big pot, so that they're at the same level as the top of the brick

    Put water in the pot so that it barely covers the flowers

    Put on the lid of the pot upside-down

    Turn on the stove so that the water starts to boil, but not so much that it's going to overflow

    Put ice inside the lid so that it will keep the lid cold while the rest of the pot heats up

    Now the water will begin to evaporate inside the pot but the lid will keep it in, making it turn into water droplets and fall back down

    Every 20 minutes or so open up the pot and take some of the water out of the little bowl you placed in it, until you have the amount you want

    Make sure to replace the ice if it starts to warm up too much. The lid needs to be cooler then the pot, even if not by much

    So yea! There you have it.
