  1. How about not living close to an airport or railroad in the first place.  NIMBY!

  2. double pain windows insulate everything  ten years back SFO did it for free if you lived so close to the airport just maybe your noise making airport has a noise abatement program I also have Cal train a rocks throw from me

  3. This is going to sound like a smart-aleck comment, but it is actually the most realistic answer, and intended in all good will.

The way to reduce aircraft and railroad noise is to move further away from the airport and the rail line.  Same goes for highway noise, which can be much worse than either of those.  If the noise of trucks in the middle of the night bothers you, don't live beside the interstate.

It may be difficult to arrange to move, but you can eventually find something.  And it is really the only way to reduce the noise.

    Good luck!

  4. You can install sound deadening materials in your sleeping areas.  You would probably have to tear the walls open to do it first though.

  5. If your window is towards the railroad or aircraft runaway, trying plastering the panes with newspapers stuck with thick glue. It helps a little. If the walls are too thin then you have to move. If the walls are thick and made of concrete then it is better. But the US has wooden walls. European houses do not fare any better.
