This is my specific example. You'll see that i've tried to split the "quote within a quote" up, but then it leaves some of it uncited. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many different theorists have debated over how and when children develop their understanding of others. Piaget and Sullivan have suggested that, “it is the arguments and disagreements between five- or six-year-olds that are of key importance” (Dunn, 1993). They have suggested that through these arguments, “children are forced for the first time to take account of the differing views and perspectives of another person (Piaget, 1932; Sullivan, 1953)” (Dunn, 1993).

  1. I've always been under the same impression, that the quote within a quote be designated by apostrophies.

Mother told me "Wait until your father gets home, just this morning he said 'I'm tired of that boys shenigans' and I agreed with him".

Sorry I couldn't think of a better example.

  2. Just to be sure, I looked this up in my copy of WORDS INTO TYPE and read the following:

A quotation within a quotation should be enclosed in single quotation marks.

My note:  on most standard keyboards, the single quotation mark is the same as the apostrophe.

  3. I believe in the United States you put quotes within what we call quotation marks:  "This is a quote."

Then to quote a quote, we put the interior quote within apostrophe marks:  "In the paragraph above, 'This is a quote' is a quote."

I think it's different in the U.K., and am not sure about Canada or other English-speaking countries.

  4. Interesting question.  I couldn't find a specific reference to this in either AP or MLA style.

It appears to me that your way of doing it is correct.  Don't forget the period before the final quotation mark, i.e. ...Sullivan, 1953)."  I also wouldn't put a comma after ...suggested that
