Question:

How do you refuse something you're allergic to when the person's staring at you wanting you to try it?

I have MANY allergies, and usually "no thanks" works, but at work lately, it's become the fad to leave "goodies" on people's desks. It's sweet, I love the gesture, but the person stands there and wants to see you try it.

I don't like making a big deal of the allergies, and I HATE having to explain, but it's getting akward.

I have done a sort of "public service announcement" at gatherings but they either forget or don't pay attention.

  1. Next time say thank you so much but if I eat that I will die. That's the kind of thing that will travel through the office very fast and soon the whole office will know.

  2. Maybe this iwll work for you. To be sweet since not alot of people knew how my allergies worked I sent out a e-mail to everyone with my favorite recipes for them to try at home. It wasn't a sneaky ploy I just said that at my house my family is on strict lockdown so they have to suffer through such "horrors" as and then go on to give 3 of your favorite recipes and add a closing saying you hope they ll enjoy making some of them at home. Some people may get offended but it may make them think in a different way and allow them to try cooking something else new.

  3. If someone is looking at you as though they expect you to eat the food that they've presented you with, it's perfectly acceptable for you to let them know that you can't eat it because of food allergies.

It's entirely possible that you'll have to keep telling people this; they may forget.

  4. if you want people to stop you going have to tell. Just say "I am allergic" nothing more needs to be said.

  5. Just tell them that you appriciate the gesture, but you are allergic to the food.  Maybe someone else would like to try the snack.

I'm a vegetarian.  People forget.  I get over it and just repeat my food preference to them again.

  6. Just tell them you can't eat it because you have severe allergies but you appreciate the thought.

  7. Try putting alittle note on your desk that

they can read, or you can push their way:

    No thankyou to the sweets,

    I'm allergic.  :-(

  8. I've lived with major food allergies all my life.  I have no problem whatsoever explaining it time and time again.

For me, it is a matter of life or death so if I have to repeat myself, so be it.

  9. If you are allergic to something I believe it's not wrong to say so.. it's polite.. I can understand you get tired of it but it makes people understand why you refuse and of course you are right to refuse to eat something which might have devastating results for you.. so I believe in a short explanation.. that is polite and the person will be satisfied as they don't want to put your life at risk.. x*x

  10. I would simply say "thank you very much for the sweets, lovely gesture, but unfortunately i have quite a few allergies and your gesture may just end up killing me" I'm sure people will get the hint after that.
