I just started cross country again and my coach tells me to relax. The problem is my body just won't relax for longer than about 30 seconds.

  1. think of something that calms you down and try to breath slower. i hope this helps you out!!!!!!! =)

  2. Relax your hands first. My cross country coach back in high school would make us run with holding a potato chip in our hands. If we broke the chip, then we had to run more. Really sucked, but I never clench my fists.

When running, occasionally move your shoulders around to loosen muscles....helps your minds think of relaxing upper body muscles.

  3. Great answer with the potato chip - the other thing is to imagine you are holding a buterfly by it's wings with your index finger and thumb.

Release the tension in your shoulders, try not to have you shoulders shrugged to closely to your ear.

You can also try running with someone, perhaps a casual conversation can relax you. If you feel you are running too fast, slow down a bit until you feel comfortable.

Soothing music in your iPod may also help.

Hope that helps. I keep a runner's blog if you are interested, see below
