How do you remove ALOT of glass from an 8 foot deep in-ground pool?

Our glass outdoor dining table was thrown into our swimming pool during a wind storm. Now all of the shattered glass is in the 8 foot deep section of the in-ground pool. How do we remove all of the glass? We are afraid to run it through the pump - it will cause damage. Also we can't have all the glass drain into the street with the water. We are also afraid that if we drain all the water from the pool, that it will pop out of the ground! Please Help!

  1. Theoretically a concrete pool shouldn't pop out of the ground if emptied.  Fibreglass pools can. The pump shouldn't pick up the glass and send it into the street.   If you are concerned the glass might get into the pump somehow put some fibreglass insect screening over the pump inlet.  A pool vacuum (which one person suggested) obviously won't work.

At some stage the glass must (as you are intelligent enough to know) be removed by hand.  If you are afraid to empty the pool the only other option is to find a friend, or pay someone, who has SCUBA gear to do it for you.    You could partially empty the pool so it is shallow enough to reach the glass.  Can you fix a rake head onto your pool pole and rake the worst of the glass into the shallower part of the pool to make it easier.

If you are really adventurous and not averse to risk you could get the water level low enough for you to reach the glass and use a clean garden hose to breathe for the time you need to search around using goggles with your head under water.  Weighting yourself down like a SCUBA diver and using a hose with the water at its original depth may be just a little too dangerous.

Best of luck with the little bits that will be hard tp remove.

  2. Ever made bread? try making large dough balls , put it on the end of a stick and roll it around the bottom . Don`t leave it in the water to long or you will have dough all over . Silly putty works as well but can be expensive . Do not re- use the dough , toss it out after letting it dry. You should be able to get almost all the large pieces out (will take a while , sorry ) then you can vacuum out any remaining micro pieces and they will get caught in the filter . You will probably have to change the sand in the filter before the season ends , but it beats draining the pool and going in with a shop vac. Just try and sweep the entire pool into one area to make it easier. Sorry to hear about your misfortune , but that's what we used to do at the hotel when patrons tossed beer bottles into the pool after a night of partying. Don`t forget to use thick rubber gloves when handling the dough, you don`t need to cut yourself

  3. I would say Drain some of the pool and leave the spot with the most glass open with water, then get the net and just pick it up and throw it away or if its every where just use the net and try your best to get it out. Or hire a professional to do it.

    Good Luck!

  4. Julie--email me if you like. I'll walk you through this step by step. Is your liner at least 30 mm ? Do not run it through the pump.

  5. buy a pool vacuum

You really need to get all the glass out or someone will end up getting it into there feet..

obviously if a pool vacuum will pick up rocks it will pick up glass. She should be smart enough to pick up any large peaces with the vacuum used as a suction cup.

  6. if u rent or buy a seperate pump it will easily suck it out...dont listen to people that tell u it wont...i work in a juvenile detention center and have to clean rocks out of ours all the time...
