Question:

How do you remove a carpet that's glued to cement?

In our basement, the previous owners glued some of that cheap indoor/outdoor carpeting directly to the cement floor. Well, it's gross, I hate it, and it's getting moldy in places. How do we remove it? Is there a way to do it ourselves, or do we need to call a professional?

  1. use a square nose shovel to scrape up the carpet and most of the glue, if there is still glue on the floor, ask at your local home depot for some glue remover, that should take care of it.

  2. You just have to scrape it up.  Use a flat shovel or a floor scraper (it has a sharper edge but is smaller).  when it's up you will need some adhesive remover (available at your building center) to get the rest of the residue off the floor.

there is unfortunately no easier way to get glued down carpet up.  It's hard work and not much fun.
