I want to stain and clear coat my new WASR rifle, but the butt stock will not come off. I found two screws holding it to the frame of the rifle, one on top, and one inside. But it is still held frimly in place. Any ideas?

PS. thanks for every ones help on the other questions.

  1. Those stocks are usually stuck in there pretty good.  I have one of the WASR's as well that I refinished the stock on.  I have also homebuilt a few that I had to cut the old section of reciever off of them and then pound the stock into the new receiver by tapping it against the floor.

First start with a removing the top cover, bolt carrier and those two screws in the rear trunnion that thread into the stock. I haven't worked with the Dragunov stock version yet, but I am pretty sure that the s***w for the pistol grip will need to come out as well.  Now odds, are you still won't be able to just pull the stock out (If you are, consider yourself lucky and you're done, otherwise continue).  Instead you may need to put the gun in a padded vice or or have another person hold it tightly and give sharp taps (not too hard) to the section of stock inside the reciever using a punch and hammer (Drive it out through the back of the receiver).  If you don't have a punch, a short section of hardwood dowel  or 3" or longer bolt will work as well. If you still have none of these there is still one more option.  When looking down into the action, the rear trunnion has a circular hole in it; through this hole you can see the end of the wood stock. If you can wedge a bladed s***w driver between the lip of the hole and the end of the stock, you can gently pry/wiggle the s***w driver and loosen the stock.

When it is out, you may want to sand that projection of the stock a little bit, just so it fits a little better, but don't make it too loose.  After all, when you are done refinishing, adding stain and laquer will only make it tighter.

  2. Lets see there are three screws,

One you can see from the outside on the tang of the stock, then there is another one inside that you'll have to remove the dust cover for, and then I think you need to look in the pistol grip and remove the s***w that's in there to free the trunion.

    Hope that helps.
