  1. get the shop manual!!! I have replaced Virago starters, as I recall ya gotta take off the left side cover of the engine case.first ya gotta take off the gear shift and footpeg. then there is a clip that holds it in place, remove the clip and the starter will slide right out. you are gonna need the gasket for the engine case cover. oh yea have something to catch all the oil thats gonna come out.

  2. Thunder had the best advise, but if you have to, take the left side cover off. Inside will be a convoluted system of spring slip clutches and worm gear and starter gear. Take a picture of it every time you undo something. You will finally have the starter motor in your hand.  HOWEVER"/#%3 first--- make sure its the starter. There are about 300 safety relays to keep you from ever learning how to drive a bike correctly.  Take a big battery (like out of a honda car) and (with the bike turned off and in neutral.) Jump start just the starter. ie the little post on the end of the starter motor. If that works- get a shop manual and track down the sidestand switch, the clutch pulled in switch, the I'm in neutral switch and the I have the brake on switch. I got so tired of it all I found the hot from the start button wire and hooked it straight to the starter solonoide. Problem solved.

  3. Several gears, very difficult take to someone who knows what they are doing!
