Question:

How do you remove primer from wood?

Ok, so my Dad made me this great platform bed. Problem: he painted it insane colors (orange, blue, white) to match my bedroom in my parents' house. I moved less than a year later. Now, I want the bed to NOT have the crazy colors. We got the orange and blue off. Now the problem is the white. And apparently, it is PRIMER not paint. Way to go Dad. I was wondering what the best way to get that off would be. And it NEEDS to come off, because we are planning on staining it. Any suggestions? Sanding sorta works, but takes for-ev-er and the bed is rather large.

  1. primer is made to soak into the wood it will be very difficult to get off other then sanding it all off

  2. Have you tried using paint /varnish removers and if you have try using either acetone or lacquer thinner. No matter what it will be time consuming.

  3. no way to git primer off--as was said it s made to soak into the wood,,,you could use a solid base stain,,which is not like regular  stain ,  thicker,,,,but is made for this purpose,,and by the way i don't like the  comment bout your dad,,  WAY TO GO DAD-- you make it sound like he did it on purpose,,,he made this bed for you,,and seems like you don't appreciate it,,that s the trouble with most youngings now days---no appreciation for some one who loves them and tries to give them a home made gift instead of a run of the mill store bought   kind,,,  so if  you want to sand it  down to the bare wood---i hope it takes longer for you do this than it took him (out of love for you)to build it,,,consider this---lots of youngings  don't have a daddy to build them a  special ---one of a kind    gift---i hope your daddy don't read  your letter,,,,,,

  4. Any stripper should take it off. I like Kleen Strip's orange can. Can't remember its name. Stinks to beat heck, but does its job. You might be able to get your hands on the eco friendly stripper which is supposed to work really well, but not very toxic.

And if you decide to sand get something that can easily get into corners. HD's got a few hand held ones at decent prices. I like Ryobi personally, but they have a Black and Decker, too.

  5. Try using a palm sander.  If you don't own one, you can buy one at Lowe's or Home Depot or you can check with your local rent-all place & rent one!

    Hope that helps :)
