Question:

How do you remove rust from an old metal porch swing?

I have a circa 1950's metal porch glider. It used to be my grandparents' and I inherited it. Over the years the paint has faded and it has collected some rust. I'd like to remove the rust and then paint it with rust-proof enamel spray paint. Does anyone have any solutions for the rust removal and pointers for when I go to paint it?

  1. Use a product called "ospho" avaialble at home deot, lowes, or about any paint store...I will give you a link showing the product..I believe the link will show gallon prices by the case, but it is avaialable in quarts at the hardware stors..this product you spray on the rust with a common spray bottle and let it set overnight.. then the next day brush it off with a wire brush, prime and paint...this product actually changes the rust into a different chemical compound and it is no longer rust..I am a 37 year experienced painter and we use it faithfully...naval jelly is kind of obsolete now days but works good..but takes more time and effort..You have to brush the gel on and alot of other procedures using alot more time..with ospho..you spray and go..

  2. First, the old paint can be a detail that add value to the glider, making it an antique, try to do a little investigation on Internet about the model and probable value.

If it is not too big, you can use sandpaper to remove the rust and loose paint. The well bond paint, although faded, would not be a problem with new enamel. You can use steel wool or cooper scouring pads. If the thing is big, try sandpaper discs mounted on a drill or sander. Or you can use a commercial rust remover. Some have to be rinsed but some can be painted right over. When ready to paint spread a drop cloth over your work surface. Take away children or pets. Make sure you have good ventilation.

  3. You can use a rust remover like "Navel Jelly"  you brush it on let it work and then clean it off.  Combine that with a soft steel wire brush.

What has always worked best for me has been a steel brush on my electric drill.  They come in different types and stiffness's.  You don't want one that is too course or it will leave scratches in the surface.  You don't want one that is too soft, as it will not remove the rust.

Make sure you use a good METAL primer before you paint.  Metal needs to be primed or the paint will be peeling next year if not sooner.
