  1. Things You’ll Need:

    Dishwashing liquid

    Steam iron

    Large spray bottle

    Hot water

Several plain white cloths or paper towels

    Step1

Turn the iron on and let it heat. Use a setting for the type of carpet fiber you have so you don't melt the fibers. If you're not sure of the carpet's fiber composition, keep the iron on a low to medium setting.

    Step2

Mix 2 teaspoons dishwashing liquid with 2 cups of hot water in the spray bottle.

    Step3

Saturate the stain with the hot, soapy mixture.

    Step4

Wet a white cloth with hot water. Fold it over once and lay it over the saturated carpet.

    Step5

Place the iron over the towel and leave it for two minutes. Check on it a couple of times to see if the bond between the Kool Aid dye and the carpet is weakening. Once you see the towel start to absorb the color from the carpet, it's starting to work.

    Step6

Rinse the towel or replace it after two minutes. Place the clean, hot, wet towel over the stained area and set the iron back on the towel. Put pressure on the iron if the carpet has a thick or dense pile.

    Step7

Keep working the stain, replacing the towel every two minutes until the stain is gone.

    Step8

Flush the cleaned area with cool, clear water until you see no suds from the detergent. This keeps the soap residue from reacting with the sugars in any Kool Aid residue.

    Step9

Use dry, white cloth or paper towels to blot up the excess water. Let the area dry.

    Step10

Vacuum over the dried area to restore uniformity to the carpet pile.

    Reappearing Stains

It is not unusual for stains to sometimes reappear after spot-cleaning. Wicking occurs when a liquid has been spilled on the carpet (usually a large quantity) and cleaning attempts remove only the stain and liquid from the carpet fibers. Liquid still remains in the carpet backing or padding. Through capillary action, the stain can "wick" back up into the carpet fibers. Residual resoiling occurs if staining substances or cleaning products are left in the carpet and attract soil.

These stains are not permanent and typically can be removed by simply repeating these appropriate step-by-step directions listed on the above chart. Here are some additional suggestions:

Avoid overwetting the carpet backing during spot-cleaning and rising. Blotting to remove excess moisture reduces the occurence of wiking stains.

Use a "wet-vac" to extract liquid from the area if possible. Paper toweling placed over the cleaned area and weight with a color-fast object will help absorb resurfacing stains. Use of fans to decrease the drying time will also help.
