  1. they make tools for this, check an auto parts store. the tools are 2 u-shaped steel wires that fit into the holes at either side of the stereo face. simply push the tools into the holes about an inch, tweek the tools slightly away from each other and pull, the stereo should have popped out a little. HINT>you could make these tools from a wire hanger, i have done it at home. i have the correct tools at work.

  2. You'll need the removal tool, but you'll need to be careful when pulling the radio out that one of the tools don't slip out if it does it'll be jammed in there. If that happens you'll have to take to a dealership and they'll have to take the dash apart (some of this info might not accurate because the radio guy at the dealership was telling this):

  3. There are two ways of going about this (I had a '93 hatchback).

They make a tool for removing the stereo (why the h**l someone would steal the stock deck out of an escort is beyond me - but then again, there are a lot of things I have trouble comprehending...), you can either try to locate one of these, or take it to a stereo shop where they usually have them (although they might charge you a couple of bucks for popping it out).

Then there is the way I did it:

    Step 1) Grab a crowbar.

Step 2) Duct tape some padding onto a piece of two-by-four.

Step 3) Ram the crowbar into the tape deck (or if it is just an AM/FM stereo, maybe hammer a big spike into it first to make a hole for the crow bar.

Step 4) yank back and forth a few times (use the padded 2x4 to keep from making a mess out of the dash around it as you are prying it out - unless you don't care).

Step 5) Voila, it's in your hands.
