Question:

How do you remove wallpaper that was done incorrectly?

I have been trying to remove the wallpaper in my room and I have figured out that the person who put it on (previous owner of house) took self-adhesive wallpaper and then glued it to the wall. And I don't think that they used wallpaper glue! I've tried using an enzyme based wallpaper stripper to no avail. It isn't coming off and I'm about ready to pull my hair out! Does anyone have any advice?

  1. get a blow dryer. the heat will loosen up the glue.

  2. Steam is probably your best real option, but for a household product trick, try fabric softener. I have a friend who paints and does faux finishes for a living. I told her this trick I heard and when she tried it, it actually worked. The tip was to mix fabric softener with water in a spray bottle, score the wallpaper so the mixture can get behind it, spray it down, let it soak in for a little while, then start peeling. She used a dryer sheet with fabric softener in a spray bottle of water and said it made a huge difference. It might not work with unknown glues used by the previous person, but it's something you can try before getting a steamer.

  3. Steaming is the only correct way. Start at a seam or corner and when the steam loosens the wall paper, pull it and work your way along until it comes off. Don't get in a hurry or you may remove the paper and leave the glue.

  4. use a wall paper steamer to heat and loosen the glue...should peel right off after a couple passes.
