  1. Start by chilling the wax, so it gets hard and brittle: put the sweatshirt in the freezer, or rub it with an ice cube or whatever.Give it time to get really solid.  Then scrape the hard wax off, gently., with a dull knife. Brush it with a stiff brush, to get as much hard wax off as you can. Chill it more than once, if you have to, to keep the wax brittle.

Then, put several layers of cotton rags or absorbent paper on both sides of the stain.  Using a warm, not hot iron, press it gently over the stain. The wax should melt and be absorbed into the rags or paper, leaving a damp-looking stain.  If it was a white candle, rub it gently first with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits, then a fairly strong cleanser or detergent. Launder as usual.

If it was a coloured candle, the remaining stain will also be coloured.  The rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits become really important. Try to blot out the stain, using absorbent material, gently so as to avoid spreading the stain. Then continue as above.

    * Or you could take it to the dry cleaner's (!) They have the chemicals needed to do the job properly, and it isn't expensive. *

  2. These stains generally involves two components: oil/wax and dye pigment. Remove the only portion first and then the dye portion.
