I have a table, its wood, but like a light colored wood, and its got the shine on it kinda glossy. Well its older and its scratched and looks like a hand me down. I'd like to make it black or at least a darker stain of brown. What do I do. I assume it should be sanded? What kind of paint am I looking for? Advise please.

  1. If the table has some gloss on it you probably need to strip off the old finish of varnish or polyurethane before painting. You can use acetone and steel wool pads to remove the old pretty easily. Then wipe clean with denatured alcohol on a soft cloth. If it's rough you may have to do a little sanding and then wipe clean again. Then you can either stain and poly...or paint any color you like.

  2. paint it. I AM BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Leave the paint and rather go for a dark stain or stain varnish. You can sand it down to get rid of the scratches and then paint it with the varnish stain and sand down lightly between layers. It should be 100% after three layers. You could also sand it down completely and then apply the stain and then varnish it sanding down lighly between layers to smooth the surface out.

If you have a spray gun you can spray the varnish stain that is thinned. Spraying works a trick.
