How do you repaint old ball and claw bathtub?

what kind of paint is used? the outside of tub has flaking, but overall it is in good shape

After you wire brush it, prime it with a primer made for metal.  If you do, you can use any paint.  Latex, oil, etc.

you should be able to get some enamel paint that will stick but i believe you have to wire brush it first. i would go to a hardware store in the paint section or you could try a plumbing supplier

You could try an appliance paint. It comes in spray cans. You would have to cover everything with plastic drop cloths because of the overspray.
