  1. A1) are you prepared to do internal engine work?

  2. The first answer is the correct one. Don't pay any attention at all to the one above mine since the F-150 didn't come with a 3.8L engine in '84. The smallest engine available in any "84 F-series truck was the 4.9L (300 cid) inline six. You might have to jack up the engine to gain enough clearance to get the oil pan out, but, it's really not that hard of a job.

    Good luck with it.

  3. Drop the oil pan, it's inside the pan, really easy to do, harder getting the pan off and on, then replacing the pump.

  4. 3.8L Engine

        1.  Remove the oil filter. The oil pump is the assembly to which the oil filter is attached.

       2. Remove the pump cover attaching bolts, and the cover.

       3. Lift the pump gears out of the pocket in the front cover, and remove the cover gasket and discard.

    To install:

       4. To install, make sure the gear pocket is lightly packed with petroleum jelly, or liberally coat all gear surfaces with an oil conditioner or a heavy engine oil. Do not use chassis lubricants.

       5. Install the gears in the cover pocket, making sure the petroleum jelly fills all voids between the gears and the pocket.

    WARNING

Failure to coat the gears will result in failure of the pump to prime when the engine is started.

       6. Position the cover gasket and install the pump cover. Torque the pump cover attaching bolts to 18-22 ft. lbs.
