How do you replace a background on a picture using gimp?

in the layers dialog u can make ur background transparent and then add a pic to a new background image and just move the layer down to the very bottem and it becomes ur back ground if u need more help i can do it for u just email me the pics.

also paintDOTnet is a very good program for this
