How do you repond to somone if they say "Whats up"?

Do you tell them what your doing? is it just another way of saying hi? or does it mean how are you.

or maybe somthing else

I usually say something witty, like "My head, why what's up with you? or "The sky - when it falls, whitewash it for me please!!!"
