A family member recently took the title to a vehicle and had "a friend of a friend" notarize a forged signature, basically stealing a vehicle from the estate of an extremely sick parent. Who do I report the notary to ??

I know that will come back on the family member but the $ from the sale of that vehicle should have been left to the estate to take care of the surviving parent.

  1. In North Carolina, notaries are under the jurisdiction of their county's Register of Deeds.  Your state's web site should let you search for "notary public" and you can find out how to file a complaint.

I'm going to guess that you probably should call the police department as well and report this.

  2. I believe Notaries are under the State Attorney General or Secretary of State. This one violated a law and could be sued, besides losing their Notary license. Notaries are also required to be bonded.

  3. Notify the guardian or executor of the estate.  It is the estate that has been wronged.  If s/he won't do anything you should see an attorney.
