  1. Get out the  owner's manual and look that question up.Back in the 80's I had to .buy a reset module to reset the computer and all the gauge, this may not be what is required on todays 'beamers'. BUT, I wouldn't take the cable off,I also did not know the code for the radio.Never worked again. If all else fails go to AUTO-ZONE they do it "FREE".

    if  nothing is wrong with your car . after you disconnect your battery and connected back is should turn off the check engine light..

You can either get it cleared by a mechanic or you local Autozone or you can fix the problem and drive it a hundred miles or so.  Chances are it's emission related (OBDII E36)  Go to Autozone get the code read.  Replace or service whatever needs work and then either get the code cleared or just wait it out.
