Usually the oil light is a direct indication that the oil pressure is low in the engine.  You should not run the vehicle until you confirm that there is enough oil and that the oil pressure is getting up above the lowest set-point on the pressure switch - usually 5-10 psi on idle.  If all this looks good, check to see if there is a problem with the oil pressure sender or the wiring.

Depending on the year of the car

push and hold the odometer reset button on the inst cluster before you turn the key on. Turn the key on and  watch the light go out on the cluster it may flash and then go out, takes about 5 seconds or so. release button turn key off and start the car to make sure its out.

I'm not sure if its going to work for your car, it works on the maint reminder light on late models. Good Luck
