Question:

How do you respect a disrespectful person?

I'm not talking about someone you can avoid. I'm talking about those people in your life that you don't have a choice but to be around. I'm learning how to draw the line, set my limits so to speak. But when I get around these people I end up lashing out at them in reaction to their rudeness. And I don't want to do that. Two wrongs don't make a right. I didn't deserve the treatment they gave me and I don't want to give them any reason to keep it up. These are the kind of people that don't see how they treat people. I've tried to talk to a couple of them but that only resulted in blow-ups. They refuse to see what they are doing and take responsibility for their actions.

I really do want to learn how to respect these people, because I do love them despite how they treat me. Does anyone have any ideas of how to do this?

  1. I would try to be cordial if it is a case with a coworker. I wouldn't associate with them after work. I wouldn't drink a beer with them at the bar. Some relatives I don't think you really have a choice except make an excuse for being out and away from them. Some people are the kind that want you to blow up so they can have something to have a lawsuit against you or the company.

  2. You can't respect someone that doesn't respect you. I'd offer them the basic courtesy of good manners but beyond that forget it. It has to be a two way street :)

  3. I know it is asking a lot but try not to let their comments and rudeness bother you, try at least not let it show.  You don't have to be rude back.

Remember "avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.  If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.  Be yourself."

You may try reverse psychology instead.  Challenge their minds.

    Much luck.
