How do you retreive phone messages on a land line phone using ATT/Yahoo DSL?

We have had DSL for a while but used it only for the internet. We decided to hook up our phone and we can get and receive calls but evidently when not around they go to voice mail. How do we access voicemail without have to ask AT&T and seem idiotic.
