  1. Best find out if the light rail goes near where you live. Then there will probably be ticket deals i.e. season tickets or off-peak, to encourage you to travel. Best get details of the light rail then get ticket deal which is best for you. :-)

  2. Its like an outdoor subway. there are many stops that you can pick it up, you pay for a ticket on the platform and get abord and ride it to where ever you are.

    hope this helps

  3. The procedure may vary slightly depending on where the light rail but many have what is called a "Proof-of-Payment system".

You purchase the ticket from a machine at the station, then insert it into a time stamp (either built into the vending machine of a separate machine).  That validates the ticket for your current ride.  That way if a ticket inspector asks to see your ticket then you have proof that you paid for that ride.

If you do not validate the ticket, then in many cases the operator of that light rail may treat it as if you didn't have a ticket at all and you could be subject to arrest and a fine.

Try to see if the light rail you are looking to ride has a web page.  They usually go into some detail.

Just as a point of information, these are the ones in New Jersey.

    http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.s...

When you get to the above page click on "Light Rail Fares".  The page that comes up will give you more information on the rules (of the NJ systems anyway).

  4. The one major difference between light rail and heavy rail is that with the former you usually buy tickets from a machine and there is a lot of trust placed in people to buy those tickets as there is no regular checking of tickets, but just unexpected swoops. Alternatively, many systems have gated exits, requiring tickets to be swiped on leaving the platform. Otherwise there is very little difference.
