  1. incubation of reptile eggs is a fairly extensive and complected process. different species require different humidity levels and a very constant temperature range provided by nature in the wild, or in a captive sense a fairly pricey incubator, or a homemade type, which is easier to fumble with. aside from that, depending on how old the eggs are, disturbing their position can permanently affect growth and development .  breeders always mark the top end of the eggs and are careful to replace them as such. unless you are willing to create a specialized enclosed box with the ability to consistently and automatically monitor humidity and provide the correct temperature 24/7 then the eggs are very unlikely to survive in a captive sense. i recommend you leave the eggs be, and wait for nature to take its course. who knows, one day you might come across some baby skinks in your yard. its great your children have taken an interest in nature and i hope you continue to encourage that. valuable lessons include "look, but don't touch".

    Good Luck :)
