Round 5.0621 to the nearest thousandth.

  1. 5.0621 is to the nearest ten thousands so we move the decimal back one place and drop the 1  

    5.062


  2. you will need 3 deciamals places,   the 2   1 is less than 5  so you would drop the 1   and you have  5.062

  3. 5.062

    To round find the place you want to round to (in this case 3 beyond the decimal point) and then look to the next place to the right (lesser value)

    If that number is more than 5 then round the place you are rounding to up, if less than 5 then round down. If exactly 5 then look to one more place to the right, if it is more than zero then round up, if exactly zero keep going to the right and repeating.  If the number is exactly 50000etc. and you run out of digits then round the orginal place to the nearest even number (with zero being an even number)
