How do you run a closest to the line game in golf?

I'm planning a golf tournament and a few of the participants have asked if I can run a 'closest to the line' or 'closest to the rope' game. I've had it explained to me a few times, but I still don't really understand. Can someone explain to me how to run one, and how to determine a winner. Is it male & female or separate like longest drive?

  1. Some type of chaulk powder dispenser is used to place a straight line down the middle of a wide open fairway. Now provide a cardboard  with male and female sections and a tape measure plus pencil so that a person who is close to the line can record his/her name and the distance from the line. Only those who come closer to the line than the closest  footage  on the sheet  will be recorded. Examine the sheet for the winners.

  2. I have never played that:

A longest drive would be easier, the player with the longest drive on a certain hole what you pick wins.

The ball must land in the fairway

Have one for the ladies and one for the gents.

When somebody hits the fairway, they mark it with a tee peg and peice of paper with their name, and if someone beats it they move the marker and change the name.

The last group brings in the marker with the winning name.

This can also be done with closest to the pin, on par 3s.

I think that would be easier, or maybe have a longest drive one one hole and a closest to the line on another

  3. I think what you mean is when you take a string on a hole and run it right up the middle of the fairway.  Who ever hits a drive closest to the string is the winner.  You can have a competition for the ladies and one for the men, just need two markers so they can write in their names

  4. Either chalk or paint a line down the center of the fairway in the range that most people will hit into off the tee.  Then have a stake with a pad and a tape and have them measure out from the line.  This game gives even the short hitters on the tee a chance to win something.  Longest drive contest cater to big hitters and forget the rest of the field.  One other contest I have seen is to draw a circle target in the fairway somewhere ( 5 or 6 ft around) and give prizes for hitting it.
