Question:

How do you run longer distances (increase endurance)?

I just began running for the first time in awhile. I can currently run 2.5 miles at about a 9 minute pace.

I am 16, 152 lbs. 6" 1'. I am not fat, and am athletic (lift weights, play basketball).

I want to be able to run like 6 or 7 miles every time I run. I've been trying to build endurance by running every other day adding a little less than half a mile each day.

Is this a good way to increase mileage and endurance? Any suggestions for an endurance plan to reach my goal?

  1. dont forget to eat and get enough rest after you are done running, watch your breathing while running, dont hyperventilate, passing out on the track or trail is not part of the plan for good athletes, but happens often if not careful

  2. Your plan will work just fine.  But I would bet, if you just don't stop running, you could run 6 miles tomorrow.  We're built to run.  It's the mind that stops us.  My dad runs one 13 mile race every year with no training whatsoever.  He just doesn't stop once he gets going.  Then again, Dad's always been a little stubborn.

  3. Yes it is definitely a great way to increase endurance. You just have to keep running longer and longer and you're endurance will increase over time. Adding half a mile is great too because you aren't pushing yourself too hard to the extent where you are completely wiped out. So just keep doing what you are doing and it will turrn out fine.

  4. Right now it sounds like your in decent shape.  Give a week or two of light training.  Run 2-3 miles a day at an easy pace.  From there begin to build up your mileage slowly.  Check out this 10K program to get you on the right track. Don't start it until you can run 4 miles non-stop with ease.
