How do you safely dispose of out-of-date medicines in the UK?

I have some pills (I can't even remember what they were for!) that I do not want to just put in the dustbin.

  1. just take them to any chemist  they will take them of your hands  and  for free i had to do this for my mother  awhile back even pills which she was taking but out of date still had to be handed in
