  1. Repondre

  2. to answer = répondre

    to answer somebody = répondre à quelqu'un

to answer a question = répondre à une question

    la réponse = the answer

    une réponse = an answer

La réponse à la question est... (...à cette question est...)

La réponse au problème est.... (...à ce problème est...)

    Hope this helps.

  3. You're absolutely right!

An answer is a response.  Response and Answer are really synonyms.  Response is a word of Latin origin (via French) and Answer is a word of Germanic origin (via Old English).  The words are often used to define each other.

We tend to use the word "answer" when referring to the response to a question, but simply using "response" is just as valid.

Positivemindattitude has given you the best explanation of the French usage.  You are looking for the noun, so Response/Answer in French is "réponse".

  4. that's correct, it's 'réponse'. I know it sounds a bit confusing since it seems like it would be like response, but it's right. Sometimes words with slightly different meanings sound similar in French and English
