Question:

How do you secure a wireless network? (Linksys)?

I have a Linksys Wireless-G router (model WRT54G). When I originally set it up, nothing ever gave me the option of securing it so outside people couldn't use it. It was not really a problem, however, because we lived in a house and there weren't really any people around to use our signal other than us. However, we recently moved into an apartment and there are several other people around who could be using our signal. I really don't want that, especially because I don't particularly like any of the people aroud us, so I want to find out how to secure the network so others can't be using our wireless signal.

  1. hi there i have the same router. on your web browser type in 192.168.1.1 and press enter.

The user name is required if you havent set them then type in the defaults: USERNAME: admin PASSWORD: admin

Now you are on the config site of the router. Click the wireless tab at the top menu.

A new page appears, under security chose from the drop down box WPA personal.

Type in a password (the password must be 8 or 16 characters in length - eg a password of: 12345678)

    Now press save.

There you go you are now secured.

On your client machine you will be disconnected when you save. this is normal - it is the router resetting with the new setting. now find you network and type in the new password and you are now connected!

  2. I was told by a friend of mine to Go to the linksys menu, click on wireless, then click "wireless security".

    Security mode: Chose WPA2 personal

    WPA shared key: its-your-password.

  3. I have the exact same kind of router. What I did was opened my browser typed in the url box 192.168.1.1 then enter. then type in the password if you haven't changed it it would be admin. And you can only access the router's settings if you are wried to it. Then I enabled WEP encryption and made up the hex code.(Some people prefer WAP though so it's your decision). Then I went to Wireless or whatever and found the MAC filtering box and check the box that only allows wireless if they are on your MAC filter list. Then open your filter list and add the wirless devices that you want to use your router on this list then save it and there you go, you're all safe.
