I want to replace the factory 6x9 speakers in my 1988 Olds 98. I don't want to spend a lot of money; still using the factory deck. I mainly use the radio alot, so I just want clear sound.

Should I purchase 25 watt speakers at a discount store or spend a bit more and go for 10-60 watt speakers? What is the difference? Thanks

  1. Get the Infinity 9622i. They are 2ohm speakers which will allow your headunit to produce more power to the speakers and create a more clear sound.  They are about $90 at wooferetc.com but well worth the price.

  2. If you're just going to use the factory deck, find yourself a pair of speakers with the highest sensitivity.  Forget about the wattage all together.  It's not going to matter at all for you.

  3. i would strongly not recommend 2ohm speakers simply because your deck's amplifier was not made to handle 2 ohm loads. i have seen brand new kenwood HU's clip and shut off when having to drive a 2 ohm speaker. thats just stupid advice and can result in the replacement of your deck.

i would suggest a good 15 to 30 watt speaker to replace your factory speakers.

or if you have time for the nitty gritty, look for high sensitivity in your speakers like the gentleman on top suggested. anything from a sensitivity of 90db @ 1watt @ 1meter and above yould do very well.

there wont be an audible difference if thats what your asking. the 60watt speaker can just handle more power. thats all. if you just want a replacement of your factory speakers then the 25watt speakers you mentioned would do just fine.
