How do you send a text message from Yahoo to a cell phone?

I know how to get to it but, when I try to send a text message, it says that the phone number is invalid. I'm wondering if the phone number is in the right format. For example, should the phone number be like this: [phone] with the area code in parenthesis or without parenthesis? Should I use the dash (-) or not? Please give me an example of how the phone number should be.

When you open up your email, there is a place button in the top left that says "new", that brings up a dropdown list.  From that list you can select "text message SMS".  That brings up a screen that looks like a chat screen inside the email area.  On the top there is an area that you enter in the phone number.  No you do not need to use the dashes in the phone numbers, but you can, you also don't need to use a one in front of it, but again you can.  Then you just type in your message and send.  The person will receive it as a text and when they text back it will show up in this screen and will look to you like you were chatting with them.  you can type the phone number in just about anyway you can think of that is proper and it will send the message.  This works just as fast as sending phone to phone so carrying on a conversation through texting this way is fine.  I do it all the time.
