  1. Better to add your own text file to the Files section and have it automatically be sent to all new members; the default Welcome Message in the Management section provides some useful information to people who may be new to Yahoo Groups as a whole.

To do this, log in to your Yahoo Group, then click on Files on the left-hand side of the page.  Then click on Create Text File towards the upper-right-hand corner.  In the first box on the resulting screen, give it a name (in the Group I moderate, I called mine Rules.txt ); if you want to, you can add a short summary/description in the second box.  In the Auto-Send To Members section, select the choice for Upon Joining Group.  Then, in the large File Content box, type the rules and other details for your Group that you want in this welcome file that will be automatically sent to new members.  Don't forget to click the Create File button (towards the lower-right-hand corner) when you're done.

  2. you can edit the default one- depending on characters, 2000 characters is max

management- under group settings click memberships- Membership Type and Welcome Message (Edit) <-- click the edit- scroll down to "Welcome Message:    This message is sent to members when they join your group." and edit the text box below- click save changes

  3. go to the files tab

    then hit create text file

type what you want and then select notify when a member joins.
