  1. Well you didn't say what format your video is (if it's a DVD, or a file, etc...) but I would recommend using VLC media player to do this. It's a free download from http://www.videolan.org/ .

After installing it and opening it, click the open button on the left. Browse to your video if it's a file, or click "Disc" and select "DVD" if it's a DVD. Now click the "Stream/Save" checkbox then "Settings..." next to it. Select the "File" checkbox and browse to where you want to save the audio (e.g. file.mp3 on your desktop). Change Encapsulation Method from "MPEG-TS" to "Raw", select the "Audio Codec" checkbox, and in the dropdown menu select "MP3" (bitrate - 192 and channels - 2 can stay the same). Now when you are done all that, go to the "Target" box at the top and at the very end, before the very last }, type

    , select="no-video"

This will make it save the audio only to the MP3 file you selected. Then click OK to both dialog boxes. Your video should "play" to the audio file you selected.

If this sounds too hard, you might want to try MediaCoder. It's a free download from http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ . After installing and opening it, check to make sure "Expert Mode" is selected under Options - User Interface Mode. Click "Add..." and select the file you want to convert. In the tabs at the bottom left, click "Audio" and select the "LAME MP3" encoder (the other options can be set to Resample - Original,  Channel - Stereo, Gain - 0 dB, Audio ID 0). The "LAME MP3" tab will show up at the bottom right and allow you to change more advanced options. I would recommend using the "CBR" rate mode, 192 Kbps Bitrate, and about 2 for the Algorithm Quality. Select the "Video" tab at the bottom left and deselect "Enable Video". Click Start and in a few minutes you should have an MP3 in the same folder as your video.

If it doesn't work, also check the "Time" tab on the bottom left to check if the whole video is set to convert. You can also use that tab to convert only part of the video file.

When you have the output as an MP3 file, I would recommend using Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) to edit it. Good luck!
