  1. hello, when i was breading my sand-fires,i always used the hovabator.I used the same soil as you doesn't it work great!anyways, before putting the eggs in the hova, you are supposed to adjust the temp for 24 hours or more until you get the ideal temp.I always kept the vert soil damp but be carefull when doing so because i learned the hard way when i used a sprayer to dampen the soil and got the eggs wet. the result was loosing half the eggs.I consulted with my local reptile store and was told not to get the eggs wet only the soil. Since then i followed their advice and never lost an egg again.I think the hovabator is great to use, it is easy to use and has very little maintenance.Happy breading!

Ive never used a hovabator for mine before. I use a tank with 5"water in the base, heated with a fishtank heater.

Eggs are set in vermiculite/perlite, slightly moistened, in small plastic food tubs.

These are placed in a larger (cat litter tray) and stood on bricks in the water. The water comes half way up the sides of the tray, mesh lid on top for when they hatch (dont want any 'swimmers'!). There is a thermometer and hydrometer in the litter tray so I can keep track and vary accordingly.

The main tank has two pieces of plastic for a lid which can be 'slid' open abit to allow for ventilation.

This creates a humid warm environment for the eggs. Perfect!

I get extremely good hatch rates using this method.
