  1. Make a diamond shape in the air with your hands, and when the volleyball makes contact with your FINGER TIPS, not your palms, your finger tips, push out.

Be careful that it doesn't hit your palms, because if it does, then the set will be called a carry.

  2. When you set the ball Make sure you bend you knees a little so you have more force. Also you need to make sure you don't flip your hands cause it won't go very high at all. And keep you hands close together. :] trust me i tryed out for volleyball and it works great!

  3. Try to go to...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volleyball.

  4. Ok...  you can make deer antlers above your head with your hands. Then when the ball gets to you, push your arms out like moose antlers. Make sure you have your knees bent, so that you can push with your knees too.

Another way  to put your hands is to turn your thumbs and index fingers in, to make a triangle. But your fingers shouldn't touch. Make sure that you only use the tips of your fingers, otherwise it would be a lift/carry.

    Good Luck!

  5. Well, most of the other answers are right, but there's a little more to it.

    1) Hold your hands above your forehead with your thumbs and index fingers nearly touching, making a diamond shape, with the rest of your fingers spread open. When you set, you should be under the ball and it should be above your forehead. So, if the ball were to slip or you just miss, it should hit your forehead & not your face.

**before you actually attempt to set, you should check the positioning first. (look at one of the rectangular-like shape on the ball w/ the lines going horizontal. Notice how the top & bottom lines go kind of inward toward the middle & the lines on the outside curve outward. So if you take your left hand to the left outside line & set your index on the top point & your thumb on the bottom , those 2 fingers kind of make the the same curve as the line. From there. the rest of your fingers should be spread out w/ only the tips touching the ball. & do the same w/ your right hand.) Hold the volleyball like I said, Tilt your head back looking up like your about to set, and hold the ball right above your forehead.

    3) Once you've seen where your hands should be on the volleyball, make sure you see how far your hands are & remember that when you set.

    4) SETTING: Ok, now, when the ball comes toward you it should be high enough for you to get under & get into position. Bend your knees. Push up with your legs and arms, snapping the ball upward with your hands (remember: only your fingers, not your palms!) in the direction in which you'd like it to go (as though you're Superman flying). Ideally, this causes the ball to 'hang' in the air without rotating, resting at the peak of its flight in the perfect position for the hitter to hammer away.

**TIPS: In general, set the ball 2 to 3 feet inside and above the net so the hitter can get it over the net without its being blocked.

When setting, you need to make enough contact to control the direction of your set without allowing the ball to come to rest (however momentarily), which is illegal and known as a 'lift.' You also must make contact with both hands simultaneously or risk getting called for a 'double hit.' After you set, if your were to just pause yourself, your thumbs should be facing up with your fingers still spread out.

If you have any more questions about it, just ask.

  6. There are some very good tips above.  I will be repeating some of them.

Make a triangle or diamond for you to sight the ball.  You know that you have your hands in the correct position if you move the hands out of the way and the ball hits you in the forehead.  Your hands should be ready to set a volleyball, not a salami.  If someone brings the ball to you slowly, your hands should look like a volleyball before the ball gets there.  Most inexperienced setters will have their hands like they are ready to have a salami in their hands, not a volleyball.  You should not have to move your hands to get from a near ready position to the ready position.  Get ready quickly.

Move your feet so that you get to the position.  You want your feet to be still when you set.  Setting is the easiest position to play if you have great passing.  (I set for a bad passing team.  Almost everyone on the team set more than I did and I was the target.)  Since not everyone is a great passer, practice moving your feet to get into position.

Use your knees and legs.  Follow through.  Your follow through should look like "Superman flying" or your arms should be straight out and long.

You can also work on making your hands softer by working very SLOWLY and working your way faster.  If I took some time off, I would do this.  Get the ball in your hands.  Hold it.  Check your hands, your arms, and your legs to see if they look correctly.  Then, throw the ball making sure you follow through.  Early in the drill, I am talking about keeping the ball in your hands for 5 seconds or more.  Do this about 20 times.  At the 5 seconds or more.  Then, try to make it about 4 seconds for 20 times.  Then about 3 seconds for 20 tries.  Then about 2 for 20 and then 1 second for about 20 and then try to go full speed.  DO NOT RUSH THIS or your hands will be TERRIBLE.

Another drill if you have a friend.  (Does not have to be a volleyball friend.)  Get the ball in your hands in the ready position.  Have your friend try to push the ball onto your forehead for about 2 seconds and then release.  Your hand action will be like you want it to be for a normal set.  And if your friend is agressive, you will learn to use your legs or you will get hit with the ball.

    Good luck

  7. with the tips of your fingers. Kind of like makeing a triangle, you need a video or a couch maybe if you look on the internet?

  9. use the tips of all your fingers and when you set the ball, you should see a triangle in your thumbs and index fingers make sure you use all your fingers to set and try to make the ball rotate in the air as least as possible. =) ps. set the ball over your head....

  10. This is what my coach taught me. I'm not very good at explaining so you should try to find a video. This is a link to a picture that just might help.
