I have had new points put in, but now I need to set the timing. Can someone tell me if there is a timing mark on the point mounting plate, or anywhere else? I have a 1977 Yamaha XS650D.

  1. The right set of points are controlled by the base plate, the left set are controlled by the moon shaped plate on top of the base plate.Adjust the right set first and then the left.Put a timing light on the right spark plug wire and adjust that cylinder by loosening the two big screws on the base plate where the line on the rotor is in the middle of the two lines on the stator( the ones that have an F next to them)( down on the alternator).the rotor and the stator are under the left side crankshaft end cover. You have to remove the two small phillips head screws and the plate that covers them to access them. Then put the light on the left spark plug wire and set the left in the same manner except this time loosen and adjust only the moon shaped plate controlling the left set of points. This is the easiest way to set them if the engine is running.
