  1. A dial indicator is required.

    And a service manual for the specifications.

    The service manual will tell you haw many degrees before top dead center the ignition should fire.

    The dial indicator will measure the degrees BTDC.

    The points are staticaly set to open at that instant, to fire the plug.


  2. think the Yam 400 is a 2 stroke..no year given  ??

    so.. remove the lefthand side cover from the engine/gearbox..

    this is where the points or cdi is located..

    it should have the timing marks & the plate that you can rotate(after slackening the screws) that adjusts the timing..

    to static time the bike.. remove the plug & get the bike on TDC.  then line up the marks..

    or attach your timing light & with the bike running turn the plate so the marks line up...
