Hi! I am trying to set up a volleyball tournament to raise money for a scholarship in my brother's name. My brother was killed by a drunk driver. He loved to play volleyball! I don't know where to start. Please give me any information about setting up a volleyball tournament...rules and regs...etc! It will be for fun and the goal is to raise money! Thanks!

  1. I liked what the first person suggested. I'd only add that you maybe talk to some volleyball companies to see if you can get some items donated. Then, you could have them given away as presents for the participants and some for the attendees. If you're really ambitious, see if you can get some professional volleyball players to donate some items to your cause. Most of the beach volleyball players that I know are willing to help out a cause.

    I hope this helps you,

p.s. My condolences to you and your family about the loss of a loved one.

  2. The first thing you will need is a gym.  Try to get them to reduce the rates they charge since you are doing this for charity.

The number of courts will decide how many teams you can get.  I try to not to use more than 4 teams per court.  If you use 6 teams per court, the teams will spend more time sitting than playing and they will take to 8PM to finish if you are lucky.

I have been very happy with the following formats.

If I have 3 teams in a pool, I have them play 3 sets (games) to 25 and everyone will make the playoffs.

If I have 4 teams in a pool, I will have them play 2 sets to 25 and everyone makes the playoffs.  Pool play should end around 1PM after a start time of 8AM.

If I have 5 teams in a pool, I will have them play 2 sets to 25 and only the top 2 make the playoffs.

Those styles have finished around 6PM consistently including the playoffs.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me.  I have set up 17 tournaments so far this year.  I will be glad to help you with yours.  As long as it is not this weekend.  I have 60 teams playing on 16 courts.  I will not have the time to help much this weekend.
